Love, Simon

This is the kind of gay cinema that I look forward to and my hunger keeps increasing for such movies. A lot of people would say that this film about coming out of a gay teenage is as cliched as it gets and to be honest its true; but there is something about this film that really will connect will adults and teenagers alike. Its an emotional yet funny film about sexual identity, a film that I found will be much appreciated if promoted well. I am so glad I got to see this on the big screen.

Simon is your next door teenager with loving parents and a younger sister. He has a happy life with his closest friends from childhood Nick & Leah and a newcomer Abby. Everything in Simon’s life seems to be “normal” except he hasn’t told anyone that he is gay. One day a student with a pseudonym Blue posts an online confession about how he feels lonely about being gay in school. This gives Simon a channel to discuss his feelings with someone and he starts correspondence with Blue using nickname Jacques. One of the annoying school students Martin finds out about the secret and he blackmails Simon to help him get close to Abby. The correspondence between Blue and Jacques keeps getting more intimate and personal and Simon starts feeling close. All this while Simon also tries to imagine various people around him who could potentially be Blue, including his friend at the halloween party, the waiter at the diner and another classmate in the drama class. When things don’t work out with Abby, Martin outs Simon and his life changes forever. Blue now knows the identity of Jacques and since he is not ready for a up-heal in life, he decides to disappear. Simon comes out to his family and bravely faces everyone at school. His friends, are initially mad at him for using them to save himself but eventually they get around. Finally, Simon puts a confession on the same website declaring his love for Blue and asking him to come forward and meet him on the ferris wheel in the school carnival. The whole school waits with baited breath and finally we get to meet Blue. Life is now going to be good forever.

As I mentioned above, the film initially feels like full of cliches. I mean its 2018 in suburban Atlanta and the teenagers today are very much aware of things around them, so I found a bit odd on why Simon would not come out when he knows pretty well that everyone around him would be expecting but my views change later when he tells Martin that only he can decide when and how to come out. No one should take away his right from him. The film has its share of drama but thankfully nothing ever goes over the top and a light funny tone is maintained throughout. Myself alongwith many people in theatre laughed at loud on many dialogues and scenes and I fell that its important to not make a film very heavy. Simon as actor is brilliant. He is not ashamed of being gay. He just needs time to figure out. I liked how he handles everyone at school pretty normally and besides the two asshole students making fun of him being gay, the film doesn’t show any other unpleasantness, thereby, re-iterating the fact that people are much more tolerable this days. The focus here is more on romantic story and about friendship. All of Simon’s friends also act really well and add credibility to the story and surroundings. The movie ends with a sense of equity for each of its well-drawn kids. How I wish there were movies and education and material during my days where I could have been as open about sexuality and live it and embrace it rather than hiding it till all the way in my late 20s.

I am happy that a major big studio backed this film. We have many films on first love. Now all I need is a film that shows my gay life today or in near future. There are so many more stories to be told beyond just coming out. And hopefully those movies when made would also reach a much wider audience. Till then, everyone does deserve a good love story. (8/10)

watch32 - I was afraid this would be so sticky sweet I'd end up in a sugar coma. I was pleased to be completely wrong. I identified with Simon (even though I finished high school in '84). The fear of losing your family and friends makes the secret you carry that much more of a burden. This movie helps us all find peace in ourselves and teach us to celebrate our unique traits. Put this down as a feel good classic that will endure. I'm happy I went.

Fantastic movie (feel good movie -> I was gonna love it anyway...)
Funny thing I just happened to watch 2 teen movies (Love Simon and Alex Strangelove) and they both gave me the same impression.
Despite the age gap, I could really connect and it reminded me of a lot. If things seem easier for young gays nowadays, it's still heavy no matter what. However it's the coming out itself that seems different. It's not something you "should" be ashamed of anymore, more that you have finally found yourself and it's a good thing. The serie Skam also gave me that impression. We're in 2018, you can say that you're gay.

I love SKAM. You have no idea, how sad I was when season 4 ended. I am not a teenage anymore. Not even close but something about these shows makes you connect with them irrespective of your age. Maybe because they make you think, how different your life could have been... only if !!

I feel the same way, makes you wonder how you would be nowadays. I wish there was movies like that when I was younger. To think that, like Golu said : black, jewish and gay and no problem at all! But at the same time the possible power of destruction social media can have against "not popular or in the norm" kids somewhat scares me.
And yes SKAM is love haha... SKAM was so popular in Europe they did a French, an Italian and a German version of it! But they are the exact same so a little bit less interesting (should I be ashamed that I watched all of them ? F*** the shame I can't wait to see french season 3 coming up soon lol). However they did a US one called SKAM Austin which I heard was different. Gotta find and watch it...

Skam Austin is available for free on facebook here. I am scared to see it because Skam original is still etched in my memory

Can't find where to watch it here, facebook links never seemed to work for me for this one. You'll eventually tell us if it's good :) (Or since I'm going to California in 2 weeks, maybe I'll find a way to watch it directly from there haha). Anyway norvegian skam will remain unmatched, it's too good!

Finally Watch it and its a good movie. We will I watch it again? No. The story is pretty cliche for me, closet gay blackmailed by other student who has a thing for her friend. Ruining his friendship blah blah. The only good thing about this movie is nick robinson cause he is damn cute.

The story is cliche but the execution was better. And US gave it a very broad theatrical release, which I appreciated.

Yeah, they Done great in execution. Too bad I’ve watched a lot of gay films which has a better plot than this. It really didnt rock me to my core. But still a good film.
As usual, your review is perfect. A perfect light hearted rom com. The plot is thin, I will agree, but it's a teenage movie. Reminds me of my high school years. I may grow older but I still connect...

well.. its hard to forget the good old school and college days; however old we get.

Thank you for a realistic review - it made me curious enough to take time and watch it, plus the spin-off "Love, Victor". I'm so glad I did. Nick Robinson plays Simon so well that it actually pays off in another Netflix series, "Maid" (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt11337908/?ref_=tt_rvi_tt_i_5). There he plays an alcoholic a**hole who keeps making empty promises about taking his life into his own hands, getting better for his daughter and bla-bla-bla - and thanks to the memories of his Simon it's actually easy to believe those promises. Until it becomes clear that they're indeed empty. Have you seen it/is it "your" genre?

The Shortest Distance is Round 3: Fallen Flowers

Continuing with the weird trilogy of "The Shortest Distance", I am so glad that finally I am done with part 3 and won't have to deal with this again in future. Thankfully, as of now the makers have not announced any further parts; which will save all of us on this earth from the embarrassment of watching this in near future. After the first 10 minutes are used in sort of recapping bits of first two parts, the story moves forward. Haruto is now starting to have feelings for Ruka, the mysterious pole dancer from second part. In a fit of rage, Ruka ends up killing the goat man and to save him and Haruto, Shibahara asks them to go underground. Meanwhile Shibahara continues the search for Seiya (the guy who had cut off Haruto's penis). It turns out Seiya is now also taking care of the original club owner from part 1. Both of them were released after they had informed Shibahara of Aoyama's secret location. Shibahara tortures Seiya's boyfriend leading to Seiya killin

One Summer Night (Korean)

I really wanted to like this film but for non native speakers, these movie leaves a lot to be understood and the way scenes were unfolding in front of me, I wasn't sure many times what was really going on. The story had potential button getting any back story on any of the characters limited my ability to empathize with any of these actors. Film starts with two North Korea military guys Yong Joon and Jae Sung having sex and they are caught red handed and they run. Three years later we see Yong Joon in Seoul leading a very mundane and poor life. He has a boyfriend Tae-Kyu, who is a weird guy. He is carefree, doesn't do any work and is completely emotional and financially dependent on Young Joon. In fact, even Yong Joon will go to any lengths to protect him , fend for him and taking care of him to the extent of even taking up prostitution. Suddenly one day Jae Sung appears in their life again. His motivation is not clear but it is obvious he wants Yong Joon back in his life, who

Ultimate masturbation: Shigoki no yama (Japanese) [The Ultimate Masturbation]

I would never know what was the point behind making this film. Was it supposed to be a comedy, cos it wasn't. It wasn't even porn. It was just a silly attempt at making something absolutely senseless and ridiculous. The story, as well as direction is equally shoddy. You could laugh for having seen something so bad, but I wouldn't call that comedy. An old man runs a camp about gay masturbation. The explanation given is that gays masturbate for pleasure unlike straight men, for whom the act is seen as shame or because they can't find a woman. One day a straight man shows up and wants to join the camp for his thesis. After discussion, he is allowed in. Rules include that you can masturbate together, you can masturbate one another, but there is no fellatio or anal sex. Some students of course breaks rule. The teacher then talks about 2 forms of masturbation which gives ultimate pleasure. He shows one without touching and then refuses to talk of the other. Somehow suddenly,
